Big Radio Spain: 4 Stations, 1 Great Sound — A Community Hub

Share

Big Radio Spain has served the Costa Blanca since 2012. Its platform ties four live stations, events, live cams, and local news into one community hub.

Big Radio Spain community radio platform

Community radio lives or dies by connection to place. Big Radio Spain — broadcasting to the Costa Blanca since 2012 with stations including Big FM (89.9/91.1 FM) and Pure Gold Radio (102.4 FM, DAB+) — needed a digital home that tied together everything the station is: live radio, local events, presenters, live webcams, and community life.

Big Radio Spain is a case study in the content-hub website: many feeds, one front door.

The problem: a station scattered across tabs

Before the hub, listeners had to hunt. The live stream in one place, the events calendar somewhere else, presenter schedules on social media, the Quesada Cam on Twitch, weather wherever. Every scattered feed was a listener lost — particularly on mobile, where most tuning-in happens.

The brief was simple to state and hard to execute: everything the station does, findable from the homepage, fast on a phone.

What the platform brings together

Four live stations. Big FM, Pure Gold Radio, and more — each with its own station page and live player, all reachable from a single "Listen Live" action. One tap to audio, which is the only metric that matters for a radio homepage.

Live events calendar. Karaoke nights at the Hotel Algorfa, gala fundraisers, Expo 2026 at the Torrevieja Auditorium — the station's role as community noticeboard is front and centre, with a breaking-events ticker keeping the homepage current.

Presenters and schedules. The voices behind the mic get their own pages, turning casual listeners into loyal followers of specific shows.

Live cams. The Quesada Cam streams via Twitch with consent-gated embeds — live local video that keeps the homepage feeling alive, handled with proper cookie consent.

Local weather. A Rojales weather widget powered by Open-Meteo data — temperature, feels-like, humidity, wind, UV, and a multi-day forecast. Hyper-local utility that gives listeners a reason to visit daily, even when they aren't tuning in.

Community and commerce. Property of the Week, Car of the Week, song requests, advertising pages, and community sections turn the station site into a local marketplace and noticeboard — the digital equivalent of the village square.

The engineering challenges

A site like this is a federation problem disguised as a website:

  1. Live audio on mobile — streams must start fast, survive lock screens, and not drain batteries. Player reliability beats player features.
  2. Many live embeds, one fast page — Twitch cams, event tickers, and weather widgets can each drag down load times. Consent-gated lazy loading keeps third-party weight off the critical path.
  3. Freshness signals — a "next up" ticker, today's weather, and this week's events make the homepage feel live. Stale content is the enemy; the events pipeline is the heartbeat.
  4. Local SEO — station pages, event pages, and community content target "what's on" and "listen live" searches across Costa Blanca towns. Structured event data earns rich results.

The outcome

One homepage that answers every listener question — what's playing, what's on, who's presenting, what the weather's doing, and how to listen — with four stations streaming from a single tap. Fourteen years of community broadcasting, finally with a digital hub to match.
